Description
Supposedly inhabited by the ghost of Angus Holt and victims of the wreck of the Princess, this hauntingly beautiful ruins lies at the foot of the great levee of the Mississippi River south of Baton Rouge Louisiana. The stately house burned in 1960 leaving stalwart skeletal remains of what was once a thriving sugar cane plantation. We cannot see the gorgeous places without feeling sorrow for the hands that built and worked them...but we have to feel a sense of awe at the beauty created and the courage of those who turned an inhospitable river bottoms into some of the finest farmlands in the country. It is a push me /pull you reaction....and it never fails to rise up when confronted by such blatant and lovely reminders.
