Description
This tree has stood watch over the ponds of Cameron Prairie for many years. We visited Cameron Prairie so many times...all times of the year between 2009 and 2014 when we moved away. We now live 10 hours away. We decided to revisit these amazing refuges that give refuge to so many many thousands of migratory birds every year. It is humbling to see them and so very sad to know that we are damaging our planet nearly beyond repair. Extinctions are daily now, and we are squarely to blame. This tree most likely was victim to salt water intrusion from the Gulf not so far away. When the hurricanes come the Gulf marches miles inland because the land is so flat and already wet. These two trees usually had visitors in their branches...cormorants, anhingas, hawks and many other species. It was always a much loved trip. I hope this tree remains the next time we wander. One day...this will all be under water. Birds are far smarter than us and will find their way... I hope.
