This is part of the lower trunk of the largest bald cypress in the US. It is estimated to be 1000 years old and sits among a rare forest of the giants. The old growth forests have been greedily cut down. It is not a sustainable wood and needs to be protected.
Cat Island NWR is near St Francisville LA in the Mississippi River bottoms and is under water a good bit of the year.
